Leonor Melo de Velasco
President, Fundacion Mundo Mujer-Popayan
Popayan, Colombia
Advisor for the International Year of Microcredit 2005

“The purpose of declaring 2005 as the year of microcredit is to open a space in conventional financial thought, to make indispensable pause, and to focus on the democratization of credit.

It is expected that talent, knowledge and know-how will be used in the attainment of politics and systematic and reliable way to ensure access to credit for the vast majority of the population, including the poorest sector of the working class.

This endeavor, leaving valid per se reasons of justice, is a necessary condition to obtain sustainable societies where it will be possible to live.”
