Financial Diaries
The Financial Diaries study seeks to paint a comprehensive picture of the financial inflows and outflows of poor households by recording data on income, consumption, savings, lending and investment.

Over the coming year, you will be able to read monthly installments of the Financial Diaries of one specific household, that of Jonas and Mimimi, a complex and dynamic couple that live in Langa outside of Cape Town, South Africa. The study will illustrate a record of household transactions and entrepreneurial endeavors through twice-monthly interviews.

Many changes are taking place in South Africa that allow more penetration of formal financial institutions into previously excluded sections of the population, which seem to be causing the dividing line between the informal and formal financial systems to become indistinct. The Financial Diaries will explore how this one household is affected by these changes and will provide insight into how poor people manage their money.

Daryl Collins is the Principal Investigator of the Financial Diaries. She is a Lecturer in Finance at the University of Cape Town. The Financial Diaries project is based at the Southern African Labour and Development Research Unit at the University of Cape Town. See www.financialdiaries.com for more details on the Financial Diaries project.
